H&S Legacy

Before his accident, Ian worked in the construction industry, so it is not surprising that he should choose to make that industry the focus of his subsequent working life.

Ian didn’t let his situation following his accident get him down – well at least not for long. Ian resolved to take a personal interest in construction site safety and remarkably decided to undergo professional training to become a safety practitioner himself. After gaining professional safety qualifications, Ian started inviting himself on training courses and construction site safety talks and simply left everyone speechless when he started to explain that he was a real life example of what can happen if you don’t work safely on site.

Ian accepted an invitation to take part in a HSE video production ‘Turning Concern into Action’ and before long he found himself in popular demand by several national construction companies asking him to address their large and diverse workforces directly on construction site locations around the UK.

Over a period of five years, Ian worked professionally with organisations including Atkins, BP, Bovis Lend Lease, Skanska, Bluestone and Taylor Woodrow. Notably, Ian spent a lot of time working with Mark Hodgson at Taylor Woodrow delivering many of their training programmes. The impact Ian had as a professional trainer on all the people he met while carrying out this work was immeasurable. He also contributed to the development of many behavioural training programmes for Taylor Woodrow and had begun to deliver these on construction projects when his subsequent illness stopped him from working.

All of Ian's work was voluntary, and he was, without doubt, among one of the most effective and compassionate communicators working in the construction industry. He believed passionately in his work and undoubtedly had a profound affect of many individuals, saving countless lives and promoting the construction safety message throughout the UK.
